The Silk Cut Award

The Silk Cut Award for Linocut Prints was introduced in 1995 to promote the making, appreciation and understanding of contemporary linocut printmaking in Australia. Sponsored by the Silk Cut Foundation Inc. in conjunction with Duroloid, The Award aims to provide creative opportunities for artists of all ages.

The Silk Cut Award is now one of the richest print awards in Australia, with prizes and acquisitions in the Open, Tertiary & Student Sections totaling more than $20,000 in value. The annual Award attracts an incredibly high standard of entries from Australian and international artists and the Grand Prize has become a highly sought after award which provides generous rewards and recognition.

3 Sections: Open, Tertiary and Student

A unique feature of The Silk Cut Award is its separation over 3 sections; Open, Tertiary & Student. It is currently the only art award to provide such categories.

This facet of the Award ensures clear separation and respective judging of professional printmaking artists, under-graduate visual art students, secondary and primary school students.

The diversity of prints entered into the Open, Tertiary and Student sections creates a fascinating annual exhibition varying in style from bold, simplistic lines to highly detailed work printed on a variety of supports.

ONGOING Gift to the NGA

A unique and vital part of the Silk Cut Award is the ongoing gift from The Silk Cut Foundation Inc to the National Gallery of Australia (NGA), made up of winning and acquired prints from each year of The Award.

This gift has been in place since 2004 and the collection, which now totals over 150 prints, includes all winning and acquired works dating back to the innaugural Award in 1995.

The Silk Cut Collection boasts works from a number of well known Australian printmakers and showcases innovative and groundbreaking use of the linocut medium. The collection also includes acquired prints from both the Tertiary & Student Sections of The Award, giving young artists deserved recognition.
